If you enjoy trekking across Boulder’s many trails, you might have to start paying a few bucks to continue doing so.
The Boulder City Council is considering a proposal that would force folks who aren’t Boulder County residents to purchase a trail pass.
The council wants to generate revenue so the city can purchase more open space. Councilors say plenty of outdoor enthusiasts visit Boulder every year, but many of them fail to visit the city and purchase items there, which generates sales-tax revenue that helps pay for open space.
The city has spent $208 million to buy more than 45,000 acres of open space in the Boulder area since the late 1960s. It hopes to buy about 5,800 more acres for an estimated $100 million.
Open Space trustee John Putnam said as much as 40 percent of all visitors to Boulder’s open space comes from outside Boulder County. 9News
