Like the Dan Hicks song, “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away,” the Mask Project pops up every other year at Cherry Creek Shopping Center to raise big bucks for Denver Hospice through the sale of masks painted by local and international celebs and artists. This year, its seventh edition, is slated for May 5, but it’s never too early to get ready.
This year, the mask-acquisition committee is chaired by artist Malcolm Farley. And it’s never easy to get hundreds of people to make masks — even if their assistants usually do it.
So far, he’s collected masks or commitments from the likes of Hank Aaron, Juan Marichal, Denzel Washington, fastest man alive Usain Bolt, Stan Musial and Muhammad Ali.
“And I have big plans,” he says. “People get really motivated about this.”
Shut out @ Shanny’s.
My colleague Penny Parker and I were invited to Wednesday night’s kickoff party for the upcoming Children’s Hospital gala. It came down at the new fancy digs of Mike and Peggy Shanahan. Then Parker and I were called Tuesday by Children’s Hospital Foundation and told not to come. Stay away. Heck, I didn’t even want to go until I was told I couldn’t.
The gala is Oct. 24, with auction items that include a $20,000 swanky Neiman Marcus table setting for 12 and a catered dinner from Frasca on it in your home. Also up for grabs is a trip to D.C. for a week to meet David Gregory and watch “Meet the Press” in person.
But you are Blanche.
The month ends with some odd events — so fasten your seat belts.
San Francisco’s iconic Bette Davis impersonator Matthew Martin will be in town to host a fundraiser dubbed Awful Things in Denver. This adventure includes an old-fashioned press luncheon at the Curtis Hotel on Oct. 29, performances at Hamburger Mary’s and JR’s and the Oct. 30 screening of the campy classic “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane,” with Martin’s Davis-inspired antics accenting the show. Awful Things in Denver also includes Vivienne VaVoom & her V Burlesque troupe, the Denver Roller Dolls and the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. After-party at Dazzle. Tix at .
On Oct. 31, Denver plans to make the world record for having the most people dressed as gorillas, with 1,000 participants in its sixth annual Gorilla Run, which helps benefit the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. The current record is a measly 637. The 5.6K loop starts at the Wynkoop Brewing Co. When you register, you get a gorilla suit to keep, which comes in handy all year. Go to .
City spirit.
Cherry Creek Store of Lingerie’s Cindy Johnson will be on “Today” this morning and Saturday, pulling women from the plaza for two segments titled “Do You Know Your Bra Size?” and “Do You Know Your Bra Shape?” . . . Former Rocky Mountain News columnist Norm Clarke reports in his popular Las Vegas Review Journal column that the Las Vegas Sun is courting former Rocky editor John Temple. On the phone from Vegas, Temple tells me there’s no courting going on, but he is consulting at the Sun. . . . Sez who: “Everybody has a heart. Except some people.” — Bette Davis
