AIR FORCE ACADEMY — With games at Utah and Colorado State dead ahead, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun expressed the obvious.
Asked if he could continue putting the burden on the defense to win games, Calhoun said his team had to begin scoring a good bit more points.
“We’re definitely going to play to the strengths of our football team right now,” Calhoun said. “It doesn’t mean you have to carbon copy week in and week out what you’re going to do. We have to score more points, and I’ve said that about three times already.”
Air Force’s defense played most of the game knowing that Wyoming, led by freshman quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, could take the lead on any given play.
“We like it like that as a defense,” linebacker Justin Moore said. “We thrive on that. It makes us play better. Coming in, we knew they had a powerful offense. We saw on the films that he (Carta-Samuels) makes things happen. He came out of the pocket, and we let him get away too much.”
QB battle.
Calhoun wasn’t ready to commit to a definite starting quarterback even though Connor Dietz came on for Tim Jefferson in the third quarter and led the Falcons to the victory.
“Both are only going to get better,” Calhoun said. “We’ll look at it Monday and Tuesday. It could go back and forth.”
Said Dietz: “I don’t know. We probably won’t know until next week sometime.”
Tailback Asher Clark made a statement with one of his better games in several weeks. He gained 39 yards on 11 carries and ran with authority. He said he finally is about back to 100 percent from a shoulder injury.
Taking notice.
Jeff Siembieda, executive director of the New Mexico Bowl, watched the game, saying the visit was just to keep track of teams that could participate in the game in Albuquerque.
