DENVER—A Colorado law has netted more than $600,000 from the gambling winnings of deadbeat parents.
Supporters are praising the results after the first year of the law, which casinos say has been a headache to enforce.
People who win more than $1,200 at a machine or a table in Colorado’s three gambling towns—Black Hawk, Cripple Creek or Central City—is run through a computer database to see if they owes back child-support payments.
State officials collected $320 million in child support last year out of $1 billion owed. State Department of Human Services spokeswoman Liz McDonough says with just $606,060 collected since July 2008, the money from gambling winnings is “a drop in the bucket.”
