Colorado sophomore tailback Rodney “Speedy” Stewart on Monday was named Big 12 Conference co-offensive player of the week, sharing the honor with Oklahoma State wide receiver Hubert Anyiam.
Stewart rushed 24 times for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns Saturday night in CU’s 34-30 upset over then-No. 17 Kansas.
“We know he’s capable of going from 0 to 60 in a heartbeat,” CU coach Dan Hawkins said.
Hendricks is MWC’s top defender.
In the Mountain West Conference, Wyoming sophomore linebacker Brian Hendricks was named defensive player of the week. The former Burlington High School standout had 11 solo tackles, 12 assists and also forced a fumble in a 10-0 loss to Air Force on Saturday.
His 23 total tackles set a Cowboys record previously set by Frank Erzinger in 1972.
Metro spikers sweep awards.
The Metro State volleyball team swept all three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference weekly awards Monday. Bri Morley was named offensive player of the week, Amy Watanabe the defensive player and Gabe Curtis the setter. It was just the second time one team won each award. The Roadrunners are ranked No. 21 in this week’s Division II coaches poll.
Byrd beats Brit.
Denver’s Louie Byrd, the top-ranked American boxer at 112 pounds, earned a 16-13 victory over Great Britain’s Daniel Chapman in an international dual in Norfolk, Va., on Friday.
Byrd, 19, earned one of three victories for the U.S. team. Great Britain won five. The two teams will meet again Saturday in St. Louis, with No. 2-ranked U.S. flyweight Adan Ortiz fighting at 112 pounds.
