PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Roman Catholic bishop is calling for an apology from U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., for criticizing church leaders who will oppose universal health care plans unless there are tighter abortion restrictions.
Bishop Thomas Tobin, who leads the Catholic Church in Rhode Island, said Friday that comments from Kennedy, who is Catholic, were irresponsible.
Kennedy recently told the conservative website CNS that opposition from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops over abortion was a “red herring” fanning “flames of dissent and discord.”
