Mexican drug kingpin Miguel Angel Caro-Quintero pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Denver to trafficking tons of marijuana into the United States from the late 1970s until 1988.
Caro-Quintero, 46, faces between 10 and 20 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 4 before Judge Philip Brimmer.
Caro-Quintero was extradited from Mexico earlier this year and agreed to plead guilty to indictments out of Colorado and Arizona.
Investigators say that Caro-Quintero and his brother, Rafael Caro-Quintero, were leaders of the notorious Sonora Cartel.
Rafael Caro-Quintero was involved in the 1985 murder of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Enrique Camarena.
