DENVER—President Barack Obama’s U.S. attorney nominee for Colorado is refusing to explain what conversations she had two years ago about an illegal immigrant who became a controversial figure in the 2006 gubernatorial race.
Stephanie Villafuerte is a former Denver chief deputy district attorney who was then working for Bill Ritter’s campaign. Interview summaries show she told the FBI two years ago that she had “no conversations” with anyone in the DA’s office about the illegal immigrant, Carlos Estrada-Medina.
According to records from the DA’s office, Villafuerte left a phone message for spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough that Kimbrough noted was about Estrada-Medina. The FBI apparently didn’t ask Villafuerte what they talked about in phone calls over the next two days.
