PUEBLO, Colo.—Two offbeat candidates for homecoming queen at Colorado State-Pueblo have lost to a more traditional candidate.
Students picked 20-year-old sophomore Jazmine Wells for queen. She had two unusual opponents: a 60-year-old woman who was behind a deadly shooting in 1989, and a gay man who said he felt more comfortable running for queen than king.
The unusual race pitted Wells against DeMarques Taylor, a man, and Juanita Whitaker, a 60-year-old mass communications student. Whitaker shot three people, one fatally, at a Denver women’s shelter in 1989. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Elections were Thursday, with the school’s homecoming dance held Saturday night.
