VAIL, Colo.—Mountain climber Aron Ralston has thrown his support behind a proposal to designate about 450,000 acres in four counties as federal wilderness.
Ralston has climbed all 54 of Colorado’s mountains above 14,000 feet solo in winter. He says he has explored most of the land in the Hidden Gems proposal, which could include spots in Eagle, Summit, Pitkin and Gunnison counties.
Ralston became known nationally in 2003 when he was forced to cut off the lower part of his arm because it was trapped under a boulder while hiking alone in Utah.
The Colorado Army National Guard is concerned designating the areas as wilderness could curtail its high-altitude aviation training.
