DENVER—The Denver Post reports that Arlington National Cemetery is accepting a Glenwood Springs businessman’s donation of marble for its Tomb of the Unknowns, but it won’t necessarily be used to repair cracks on the monument in Virginia.
John Haines has been trying since at least 2004 to donate about $31,000 of marble sitting at the Yule Quarry in Marble, Colo., to replace the cracked monument.
The donation was blocked, partly by red tape. The stone is from the same quarry where the tomb’s original marble was cut.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a $70,000 contract to repair the cracks using grout, but The Denver Post reports that officials have accepted the marble donation in case the tomb’s marble eventually needs to be replaced.
