A quiet election year resulted in sparse voter turnout in Adams County.

About 25 percent of residents turned in mail ballots, the lowest turnout in 10 years. Approximately 48,000 people decided the fate of a handful of local council races and ballot issues.

Mapleton Public Schools was the only school district in Adams County to ask voters for a tax increase this year — a $30.2 million bond proposal and a $1.9 million mill-levy override. The latest results showed voters narrowly turning down both measures.

Brighton’s Dick McLean was enjoying a comfortable lead in a crowded mayoral race that featured five candidates. He would need to finish with a majority of votes, however, to win the race outright. Otherwise, the city must hold a runoff election Dec. 1.

Meanwhile, Northglenn voters tapped Councilwoman Joyce Downing as their new mayor. Downing will take over for current Mayor Kathleen Novak.
