NEW YORK — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is being treated for a rare form of leukemia, and the Los Angeles Lakers great said his prognosis is encouraging.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer was diagnosed in December with chronic myeloid leukemia, he said Monday.

Abdul-Jabbar, 62, said his doctor didn’t give any guarantees, but informed him: “You have a very good chance to live your life out and not have to make any drastic changes to your lifestyle.”

• Memphis Grizzlies center Hasheem Thabeet, the No. 2 overall pick in the June draft, suffered a fractured jaw late in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers when he collided with the head of teammate Zach Randolph.

• Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Gordon will be out for at least 10 days with a sore left groin muscle.

Al Cervi, who coached the Syracuse Nationals to the 1955 NBA championship, died in Rochester, N.Y. He was 92.

Martin, Herzog on Hall ballot

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Billy Martin, Whitey Herzog, Gene Mauch and Danny Murtaugh are among the former managers who will be on the ballot when the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee votes Dec. 6. Tom Kelly, Davey Johnson, Hank O’Day,Charlie Grimm and Steve O’Neill also are on the 10-man ballot for managers and umpires.

The only former ump up for consideration is Doug Harvey.

Two men charged in the fight that led to the stabbing death of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard told police it began when one of Howard’s teammates disrespected a woman at a school-sanctioned dance, according to an affidavit that charges John Lomax III, 21, with murder in Howard’s Oct. 18 death.

Robert Enke, a goalkeeper expected to play for Germany at the World Cup, died after being hit by a train in what police suspect is a suicide. He was 32. Enke and his wife lost their 2-year-old daughter to a heart ailment in 2006.

Joe Cada, a 21-year-old Michigan poker professional who chose cards over college, won the World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas, winning $8.55 million and becoming the youngest player to win the tournament in its 40-year history. The Associated Press
