DENVER—First lady Michelle Obama doesn’t put much stock in standardized tests.

But she told high school students Monday the tests are “part of the system” and can’t be avoided.

Mrs. Obama was in Denver talking with high school students to highlight the importance of mentoring. She had lunch with about 80 girls at the Colorado governor’s mansion.

Then she went to South High School in Denver to talk with about 30 girls and boys. One girl asked Mrs. Obama’s opinion on whether standardized tests are fair for students who don’t speak English. Mrs. Obama said the tests are part of a student’s world and that she was a bad test-taker. But she told the students that she overcame poor test grades to get into Princeton because she had good grades.
