Actress Susan Sarandonan Oscar winner and mother of three — told a rapt audience at Ralston Valley High School on Monday that girls who want to achieve more should give themselves a break.
“Forgive yourself for not being perfect,” Sarandon told about 35 students — mostly girls — at the school library.
When asked by one of the students how she balanced career and family, she responded: “Badly.”
She sometimes forgot to sign permission slips for school activities for her children or fell behind in her housework because she was busy making a living in movies, she said.
But she did give her kids other advantages by insisting that they travel with her to different movie locations.
“My kids saw different parts of the world, and now as adults they are really flexible and appreciate other people,” Sarandon said.
Sarandon, who appeared with U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, was a hit with the students, including sophomore Leigh Stonerook.
“They are definite role models,” Stonerook said. “Their message was if you want something, you have to get it yourself, be self-sufficient.” Monte Whaley
