After a lengthy debate, the Denver City Council increased recreation center fees Monday for youths 17 and younger.

Slated to take effect Jan. 1, the daily fee to access recreation centers will increase from $2 to $2.25, the three- month fee will rise from $8.75 to $10.50, and the six-month fee will climb from $17.50 to $20. The fee for a year’s access remains $35 for youths.

The measure passed 9-3, following a 6-6 deadlock. Council members Judy Montero and Doug Linkhart pressed for alternatives to the fee hikes.

Parks and Recreation manager Kevin Patterson said the city would extend scholarships and free passes to youths unable to afford the fees.
