WESTMINSTER, Colo.—A suspect is dead and two officers are wounded after a bank robbery and chase in suburban Denver.
Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said the injuries to the police officers weren’t life-threatening.
The chase began after officers tried to pull over a man and woman suspected of robbing a bank. The suspects allegedly fired at the officers during the chase but the officers were able to stop them after spinning out their car about 1.5 miles away.
A shootout then broke out and the male suspect was killed. The woman was wounded and taken to a hospital. “Those are two individuals who needed to be captured because when we tried to contact them, they chose to fire on our officers,” Materasso said. “This is as dangerous as it gets.”
Jim Reuter, president of the data corporation for 1st Bank, said no one inside the bank was harmed. Reuter said he could not release more details because the investigation is ongoing.
Dozens of markers indicating where shell casings had landed were scattered around the scene.
Two of the six police cars at the scene had dents from the gunfire.
The FBI is investigating. Calls to the Denver FBI media personnel were not immediately returned.
A construction crew laying a slab of concrete witnessed the shooting, but had to finish their work before police led them away for questioning.
