The Colorado Mines women’s soccer team won the NCAA Division II Central Region Championship on Friday by upsetting No. 4 Metro State 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Auraria Field.
The Orediggers, ranked No. 21, got goals in the extra session from Kayla Mitchell, Kelsey Lang, Jessica Stark and Dani Hering, with Hering’s standing as the game-winner. Mines goalkeeper Briana Schulze stopped three of Metro’s six attempts in the PK session after posting a career-best 11 saves in regulation and the overtimes.
Mines plays No. 3 Grand Valley State in the national quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Sunday at Auraria Field. The winner advances to the final four in Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 3.
Metro volleyball wins semifinal.
The Metro State volleyball team will play for the Division II Central Region Championship after dispatching the No. 6 seed, Minnesota-Duluth, in straight sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 in a semifinal in St. Paul, Minn.
Middle hitter Lisa Jones had 11 kills for the Roadrunners (25-6), the No. 7 seed, and Amy Watanabe had 13 digs to lead the defense.
