The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are now open following an early morning collision involving an elk which sparked a chain reaction and a fire in a semi truck.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said the eastbound lanes should also reopen shortly.

State Trooper Eric Wynn said the accident occurred about 5 a.m.

Christy McCormick, of Evergreen Fire Rescue, said the car hit the elk and then the semi smashed into the car. The semi burst into flames, she said.

McCormick said she did not know how many people were injured.

Earlier, Gene Towne, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said traffic was being diverted on to U.S. 6.
