IGNACIO, Colo.—The Southern Ute tribe has set a runoff election for next month for two seats on the Southern Ute Tribal Council, after none of the eight candidates received 50 percent of the vote.

Southern Ute election bylaws mandate a majority for winning candidates.

The top four candidates in the election Nov. 6 will face off in the runoff Dec. 18.

Incumbent Jimmie Newton Jr. received the most votes in the November election, with 157 votes. Incumbent Barbara Scott-Rarick and Howard D. Richards Sr. each received 98 votes. Joycelyn Dutchie received the fourth-highest number of votes, with 89.

Six tribal members sit on the council and another serves as chairman. Terms are for three years.
