Gingerbread Mailmen
Dogs adore these crunchy cookies. What’s more, they help clean their teeth. The recipe is adapted from “Bone Appetit,” and makes 12 large or 24-30 small cookies. Tested at high altitude.
Ingredients
1/2 cup molasses
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger or 1/2teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
In a medium mixing bowl, combine molasses, honey, water and oil. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and salt. Stir flour slowly into molasses, mixing well with a wooden spoon. Divide dough in half, shape each piece into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate several hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a baking sheet. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough 1/4-inch thick. Cut into shapes with cookie cutter and transfer to baking sheet.
Bake 10-15 minutes, or until firm and lightly browned around edges. Reprinted from May 2, 2007
