SYDNEY — Australia’s Senate has rejected legislation to set up an emissions trading system in the country to reduce greenhouse-gas pollution. The Senate voted Tuesday to defeat a bill that is the centerpiece of the government’s plans to slash Australia’s emissions by up to 25 percent below 2000 levels by 2020.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd wanted the legislation passed before he attends next week’s U.N. summit on climate change in Copenhagen.
