BOULDER — The second of two former University of Colorado football players sentenced in January to more than five years in prison for burglary was released from prison today and ordered to serve five years probation instead.

Former CU quarterback Bernard Jackson, 24, who has served about a year-and-a-half behind bars, was given the lesser sentence during a reconsideration hearing today. His co-defendant, Lionel Harris, 24, was sentenced to probation last week.

Jackson will begin his probation sentence at the Boulder County Jail, where he will be on work release until probation officials approve a place or him to live in the community.

Numerous friends spoke for Jackson during the hearing Tuesday, including Liz Polumbus, who offered her home in Highlands Ranch as a place for Jackson to stay. Polumbus is married to Tyler Polumbus, a Denver Bronco and former CU teammate to Jackson.

Jackson’s attorney told the court that the Polumbus residence seems like his best living option, and Boulder County District Court Judge James Klein said he’s encouraged by the amount of support for Jackson.
