BRECKENRIDGE — Town officials are concerned about the effects of a plan to cut trees killed by bark beetles.
The goal is to reduce the risk of wildfire by removing the dead trees over 5,700 acres. Breckenridge officials are concerned that planned clear-cuts could harm wildlife and endanger the town’s water supply because of potential erosion.
Town officials have outlined their concerns in a letter to the U.S. Forest Service.
The Forest Service and mountain communities fear the wildfire risk has grown as beetles have killed more than 2 million acres of pine trees in Colorado’s mountains.
Logging in the Breckenridge area to remove the dead trees would start next year and take five to 10 years.
