GOLDEN, Colo.—A freight train derailed near the foothills west of Denver on Thursday, sending one car down to the highway below.

There are no reports of injuries.

The 94-car train Union Pacific train was crossing a bridge over Colorado 72 at the entrance to Coal Creek Canyon when eight empty cars derailed. Railroad spokesman Mark Davis says a grain car fell to Colorado 72 below.

The highway is closed to through traffic in the area. Union Pacific expects to have the car removed from the road by 6 p.m.

It’s not known yet why the train derailed.

The incident comes a day after a coal train derailed in Colorado Springs.
