GREELEY, Colo.—Northern Colorado sugar beet farmers could see earnings double this year because of a good harvest and stronger demand.
Mike Otto of the Western Sugar Cooperative says about 39,700 acres of sugar beets were harvested this fall which is up 25 percent from a year ago.
Payments to farmers in the cooperative are projected to total $3.2 million which is double the year-ago tally.
While farmers here had good conditions this year, storms wiped out much of the crop in India. Otto says that’s boosted demand for the Colorado product.
Western Sugar also has farmers in Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.
