LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Firefighters say a blaze that killed an elderly woman in Lakewood last weekend was probably caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.
West Metro Fire crews found the woman in bed as they searched the home during the fire early Saturday. Coroner’s officials were seeking next of kin before releasing her identity.
Investigators say the home had a smoke alarm, but its battery was missing.
Firefighters said Thursday that the fire caused an estimated $75,000 to $100,000 in damage.
