A pedestrian died Tuesday night after being hit by an SUV which fled the scene, police said.
The fatal auto-pedestrian accident in Aurora happened at about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of East Alameda Avenue and South Potomac Street, according to a media release from the Aurora Police Department.
The victim, Frank Correa, 36, of Aurora, was taken to a local hospital but died from “severe injuries,” police said.
The Aurora Police Department is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver who left the scene.
Investigators believe the run vehicle is black Jeep Grand Cherokee, either a 2005 or 2006 model.
The Jeep should have damage to the right front head light area and hood, according to a media release.
Traffic investigators believe Correa was crossing Alameda from the south when he was hit in the eastbound, left traffic lane by the SUV.
The victim was then hit by a red 1997 Honda and a silver 1995 Saturn. The drivers of the Honda and Saturn remained at the scene, police said.
Witnesses told police that Correa was near a painted crosswalk but he was crossing diagonally and had “not obeyed” the crossing signal.
Alcohol and speed are not believed to be contributing factors concerning the drivers of the Honda and Saturn, police said.
Broken parts from the SUV were found at the scene, leading investigators to identify the SUV as a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Police are also reviewing surveillance video from a nearby gas station in an attempt to identify the SUV and its driver.
Anyone with information on the accident, or with information on the SUV, is asked to call Det. Casey Williams at 303-739-6994 or Det. Joe Petrucelli at 303-739-6924.
