FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A judge has set bail at $1.5 million in cash for a convicted sex offender and youth chess teacher who moved to Belize when he was supposed to be serving probation in Colorado.

Larimer County District Judge Dave Williams said Friday that 55-year-old Robert Michael Snyder is “a virtual certain flight risk.”

Snyder was convicted in 2007 of sexual assault on a child and unlawful sexual contact. Authorities say the victims were his chess students.

He was ordered to serve supervised probation after his release from prison in 2008, but authorities say he moved to Belize.

Snyder was arrested Dec. 4 after he was featured on “America’s Most Wanted.”

He’s being held on charges of failing to register as a sex offender and violating probation.
