An Evergreen lawyer accused of hitting a bicyclist while driving drunk on Interstate 70 in August 2009, pleaded guilty today.

Jeffrey Scott Detlefs, 56, pleaded guilty to vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of child abuse, according to the Denver District Attorney’s office.

Detlefs was arrested in August after hitting 52-year-old Rex Hegyi, who was riding his bike along the Evergreen Parkway ramp to eastbound I-70.

Detlefs’ three children — 11-year-old twins and an 8-year-old — were in the car at the time.

The Denver D.A. office is handling the prosecution because the bicyclist is a public defender in Jefferson County.

Detlefs sentencing is scheduled for April 9 in Jefferson County Court. He could face up to nine years in prison.

Two counts of child abuse were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
