Of the four major pro sports teams in town, the Avalanche and Nuggets were the first to pledge financial support for the victims of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti.
Avalanche and Nuggets players who make a financial donation to charitable institutions toward the relief of victims in Haiti will have them matched, dollar for dollar, by owner Stan Kroenke, the teams said Friday.
Along with player donations and the match from ownership, the Avs and Nuggets have made plans for an extensive advertising campaign to raise awareness for charities for Haitian victims, including work with the American Red Cross.
The NFL has pledged $2.5 million to earthquake relief, according to the league’s website. The NBA and Major League Baseball have pledged $1 million each toward charities benefiting victims and their recovery, while the NHL has pledged $100,000.
