Even though reports show Denver weathering the market far better than most cities, there are plenty of deals to be had on luxury-priced properties here this spring. Deals…and maybe some steals, too…such as one you can preview today on Lookout Mountain overlooking Golden.
In 1999, Adolph Coors’ great-grandson Scott Coors picked out this site that looks down a thousand feet over Golden, famous for the brew made with Rocky Mountain spring water…and beyond that to a 180-degree panorama of Denver that only gets better after sundown, with lights visible for 30 or 40 miles. With the help of architect Tom Shelden, Coors created a showplace–8,676 square feet–where you could entertain in a glitzy style to match that incredible view.
On April 25, the Coors home goes on the auction block, starting bid: $1.2 million. The place once appraised at $3.5 million and was originally listed at $4.5 million.
Realtor Ali Van Westenberg with Coldwell Banker Previews won’t venture as to the real value…but she will tell you what it would cost to rebuild today: “My guess,” she said, “$5 million.”
In addition to views, it shows a strikingly contemporary interior on three levels, beginning with a sprawling ranch at the street…big entertaining area, a hearth/breakfast room off the kitchen you’ll have to see to appreciate, and a master behind ornamental doors. Lower levels descend to guest suites and recreation spaces, with an outdoor infinity pool on the walk-out. Finishes are way beyond the million-dollar range: Brazilian stone, stainless steel, kitchen in granite and pendant lighting… a housekeeper’s apartment and a 5-car garage.
“I haven’t seen anything like this,” Van Westenberg added. “Anybody that knows quality will recognize it here,” adding that the property includes a half acre to the north of the house, with its own drop-dead view, that could be divided off for another custom-build.
She’ll let you preview it Sun. April 5 and Saturdays, Apr. 11th and 18th, and fill you in on the bidding (an 8% auction commission will be added to the gavel price). Take I-70 west to Exit 256 (Lookout Mountain), exit right and turn left on U.S. 40, then follow west a mile up the hill to Lookout Mountain Road, turn right, and another 1.8 mi. to Grandview Ave.
