Warm weather welcomed the thousands of people who gathered in City Park this morning for the 25th annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Day marade.

The ceremony celebrating the civil rights icon began at 10 a.m., with prayer and remarks by Colorado officials including Gov. Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. From City Park, the crowd made the 3-mile trek down East Colfax Avenue, finishing at Civic Center.

This year’s theme was “A day on, not a day off.”

The central message in many speeches called for people of all races, age and backgrounds to continue to strive toward Dr. King’s dream of equality.

“We have all of this celebration, but we also have to act,” Hickenlooper said.
