DENVER—The former Alamosa Housing Authority executive director has been sentenced to six years in prison after admitting that she embezzled more than $1 million from the agency.

Patricia Ann Martinez was sentenced Friday in federal court as part of a plea agreement that also calls for restitution of $1.2 million. The 62-year-old plead guilty in November.

Prosecutors say Martinez embezzled the money while she was the agency’s executive director from 1989 to 2007 by writing hundreds of checks to family members, relatives or a business of housing authority employees.

Martinez says she used the money to gamble.
