A single-family Arvada home has been extensively damaged by a late morning fire.
Scott Pribble, spokesman for the Arvada Fire Department, said the fire was reported at 11:45 a.m. at 7437 Upham St.
He said dark black smoke was visible for blocks and that flames were coming from the 1970s-era home when firefighters arrived.
Pribble said the sole occupant of the house, a man in his 50s, was able to escape but has been taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Pribble said two cats perished in the fire.
He said the fire was brought under control about 12:05 p.m.
He said six engines and 20 firemen responded to the scene and damage to the residence is “extensive”.
Pribble said the cause of the fire is not known.
