PUEBLO — A flock of tropical birds rescued from a condemned Pueblo home this week are being treated for an infectious virus.

The 43 macaw parrots have a virus that can cause breathing and swallowing problems, along with vomiting and loss of appetite. The birds were seized Wednesday from a condemned Pueblo home that had no water or heat.

Their owner, an 85-year-old man who has not been named, apparently became unable to care for the macaws and was feeding them dog food to try to keep them alive. At least three of them have died.

An official with the Pueblo Animal Shelter said the owner didn’t intentionally neglect the birds and is unlikely to face charges. More than 100 other animals he owned are being cared for by relatives.
