LINCOLN, Neb.—Supporters of Nebraska’s horse racing industry have gotten out of the gate.
On Monday, a legislative committee advanced a proposed constitutional amendment (LR277CA) that would allow betting on televised, simulcast horse races at facilities approved at the city or county level.
Currently, simulcast betting is only allowed at horse tracks.
Money generated from the expanded betting would be used to help boost purses for horse races in Nebraska.
Now that the bill is out of committee, it could be debated by the full Legislature. If OK’d by lawmakers it would go to a statewide vote for final approval.
Decreased attendance at Nebraska horse races has led some to say the longtime sport is on the brink of disaster.
