BAYFIELD, Colo.—A 15-month-old boy died when the family’s mobile home caught fire after an explosion.

Fifteen-month-old Jonathan Jones perished in the fire Monday. His parents, Richard and Rosalee Jones, and two siblings escaped alive.

Richard Jones tells the Durango Herald that the fire started Monday morning after a small explosion. Richard Jones broke his hand in three places trying to save Jonathan, but couldn’t get his son out in time.

Firefighters were also unable to save the boy, even though the trailer was just 50 feet from a fire station. A cause of the fire is under investigation, with an area church and the Red Cross helping the family.
