FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A former Colorado State University student shot himself with a rifle, threw it behind a bush, and then staggered for about 100 feet in an attempt to make his death look like a homicide.

Police documents obtained by the Fort Collins Coloradoan describe how 27-year-old Matthew Quitmeyer staged his suicide and initially had investigators perplexed. Police say Quitmeyer shot himself once in the chest in July 2008. A bus driver found him in the parking lot of a CSU residence hall.

The documents show that Quitmeyer wore gloves when he shot himself and used a knife to file off the serial numbers of the rifle he used. Investigators later found two suicide notes in his apartment.

Quitmeyer suffered from chronic headaches after a car accident years before.
