Joseph “Max” Ernest, a Navy reservist who was laid off from Lockheed Martin because he left his job to serve in Iraq, was awarded $178,000 plus attorney fees and court costs by a federal arbitrator, court records show.

Ernest was employed as a counterintelligence/counter-terrorism and law-enforcement analyst in Colorado Springs in 2004.

In March 2006, Ernest received orders to deploy to Baghdad for nine months and he notified the company.

When Ernest returned from Iraq, a human resources representative told Ernest he was laid off.
