BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder officials have decided not to put a moratorium on ticketing homeless people who sleep in public without a camping permit.
The City Council had considered the moratorium after homeless people protested, saying they were being criminalized because of their status. The proposed break was voted down Tuesday.
Last year, Boulder police issued 353 tickets for camping without a permit on public property. The tickets come with a $100 fine and homeless activists say that usually translates to jail time for homeless people because they can’t afford to pay.
Boulder officials said they didn’t think suspending the citations would fix the problem.
