GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A new coalition is working to assess western Colorado’s ability to produce and process biomass like alfalfa for biofuels and carbon sequestration.

Colorado Mountain College, Colorado State University, the city of Rifle and the nonprofit Flux Farm Foundation in Carbondale are all part of the Western Colorado Carbon Neutral Bioenergy Consortium.

Its first funded study will examine the region’s capacity to produce perennial bioenergy crops such as switchgrass, alfalfa or even prickly pear cactus.

The Flux Farm Foundation recently received $75,000 in grants for biomass growth trials beginning this spring in Carbondale, Rifle and Fruita.

Consortium members hope the work can help lure companies to the area.
