They marched in the Opening Ceremonies. They’ve hung their hats in the Olympic Village. They are living a dream. Please don’t wake Jeremy Abbott and Rachael Flatt, Colorado’s two national figure skating champions.
“The Opening Ceremonies were really tremendous,” said Abbott, who skates his short program Tuesday. “The process of getting the team gear was phenomenal. The Village, meeting other athletes “
Abbott said he’s met speedskaters and members of the U.S. women’s hockey team. It’s enough to rid him of any Olympic nerves.
“I’m finding myself extremely, extremely comfortable,” he said. “I’m inspired by the Olympic rings. It’s really, really, really amazing.”
Flatt arrived Thursday for Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, which was watched by an estimated 3.45 billion people.
“For me the most special moment was when they raised the Olympic flag,” Flatt said. “I just got chills. I couldn’t believe I was actually here. The whole experience is just incredible. It’s still unfathomable. I’m still in complete disbelief at this point.”
She was asked what was it about the Olympic flag.
“That was when it all came together, that I’m actually watching this live,” she said. “I’m not watching it on TV anymore. It sent chills up and down my spine. Like, Wow! All my dreams have come true and I’m here.”
