The Colorado Department of Transportation has issued a traffic alert for drivers traveling west on Interstate 70.
Typically, traffic eases up by 10 a.m. on Saturdays but by 1 p.m. today traffic was unusually heavy.
CDOT is advising drivers to take U.S. 285 or to use alternate routes.
“People are taking advantage of going up and maybe it’s because of a long weekend,” said Ted Hill, a spokesman with CDOT.
Eastbound I-70 traffic at the Eisenhower Tunnel was periodically stopped for 20 minute intervals due to heavy traffic during the evening, but metering ended by 7:30 p.m.
Traffic woes are expected to continue Sunday and Monday for drivers traveling east on I-70 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
