Ewe’ll be missed

No. 18, the last living member of the Granite bighorn sheep herd, found dead Counting sheep.

The bighorn sheep ewe first fitted with the No. 18 radio collar in 1996 was familiar to drivers on U.S. 24 as she grazed between Langhoff Gulch and Granite. State terrestrial biologist Jamin Grigg estimated her age at 15 or 16, exceptionally long-lived for a bighorn. Her remains were found south of Granite, near the Leadville stagecoach route.

Historically, skijoring — the peculiar sport in which a horse and rider tow a skier navigating obstacles — didn’t include dogs. Instructor Louisa Morrissey of Skijor N More is changing that with this $50 BYOD (bring your own dog) workshop for beginners. Participants must know how to use cross-country skis.
