GEORGETOWN, Colo.—Three people have been ordered to pay $18.5 million to a man run over in his driveway by a drunk driver.
Forty-six-year-old Paul Savage was changing the oil in his wife’s car when authorities say Kevin Ruszkowski barreled down a mountain road, drunk and high on marijuana. Since the January 2008 accident, attorney Jim Chalat says Savage has had more than $4.3 million in medical bills and is expected to have $4.9 million the rest of his life. Savage is unable to walk.
District Court Judge Russell Granger assessed the award against Ruszkowski, Randall Guy and his son 20-year-old Justin Guy. Granger says the Guys allowed Ruszkowski to drive even though they knew he was drunk and high.
Ruszkowski pleaded guilty to vehicular assault/DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
