Exxon Mobil Corp., the largest U.S. energy company, and Hungarian oil refiner Mol Nyrt quit a natural-gas exploration project in Hungary that sought to tap enough of the fuel to feed 26 years of domestic demand.

Exxon and Budapest-based Mol declined to participate in the next stage of exploration in an area known as the Mako Trough, according to a statement Friday from Denver- based Falcon Oil & Gas Ltd., a partner in the project. Falcon is searching for new partners to continue exploring its 247,000-acre leasehold.
