ARVADA — The upset of the first round happened at the Apex Center in Arvada.
Just one year after not winning a single game in their inaugural season, the Valor Christian Eagles (11-9-0), seeded No. 15 in the 16-team tournament, upended No. 2 Standley Lake 2-1 to advance to today’s quarterfinals against Cheyenne Mountain.
The state’s leading score, Michael Schoolcraft, tied the game for the Eagles in the second period, and Tyler Hautamaa netted the game-winner midway through the third. Valor goalie Michael Porter stopped 37 of 38 shots.
Lewis-Palmer 4, Chatfield 3
COLORADO SPRINGS — Last year’s runners-up from Lewis-Palmer traded goals with Chatfield but had the last laugh when Justin Brame scored the game’s last goal late in the third period.
Steam. Springs 1, Summit 0
VAIL — Jon Winkelblech scored the only goal of the game for the No. 5 Sailors (14-4-2) midway through the first, and goalie Erik Owen made it stand up. Owen made 28 saves in the shutout.
Regis Jesuit 8, Kent Denver 1
ENGLEWOOD — The two-time state champs, seeded No. 1, had little trouble after the first period with the Sun Devils. Marshall Conrad and Max Buretz each scored two goals in the Raiders’ five- goal second-period onslaught.
Chey. Mtn. 4, Monarch 1
ARVADA — How fitting. For years, the Indians owned a spot in the state’s final four, but were facing an uphill task against the first-year and No. 7-seeded Coyotes. Kevin Davis and Jack Benecke each scored in the first period.
Ralston Vy. 1, Battle Mtn. 0
VAIL — The No. 4 Mustangs (16-3-1) had to travel for the first round to Vail, and the hometown Huskies gave them all they could handle. Dillon Taylor’s third-period goal was the difference. Cody Buesser made 27 saves in the shutout.
