BOULDER, Colo.—The city of Boulder is exploring changing its wildlife-protection ordinance to make it easier for landowners to kill stray prairie dogs that can’t be trapped and relocated.
Private landowners in Boulder need a permit from the Colorado Division of Wildlife to move prairie dogs. They need a city permit to use lethal controls.
The City Council is scheduled to use a study session Tuesday to discuss ideas, including whether to allow the city manager to issue expedited permits or allow landowners to kill stragglers without any permit.
Lindsey Sterling Krank, director of the Boulder-based Prairie Dog Coalition, says her organization is more concerned about proposals that could limit where and when prairie dogs can be relocated.
