GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Mercury has been found in fish in a reservoir that supplies drinking water to Grand Junction, but officials say the water is safe.
City officials closed Juniata Reservoir to fishing earlier this month after mercury was detected in at least one smallmouth bass.
City Manager Laurie Kadrich says water from the reservoir is tested daily and no mercury has been found.
Steve Gunderson, director of water quality for the state Department of Public Health and Environment, says any mercury in the reservoir would be so minute that it wouldn’t be detectable.
He says fish can accumulate mercury from such low levels.
Authorities say someone illegally stocked the reservoir with the fish, and they may be removed.
